Chapter fifty

Making a Deal with Elder Zang

It was a fine morning, others might have said.

Alex shivered as a cold breeze whipped through his thin robes, but it did little to alleviate the dread pooling in his gut. Next to him, the Pu brothers’ faces were drawn, their eyes darting nervously.

Looking at their faces, Alex felt dread gripping his gut. They came with an ill warning, and he didn’t like where the situation was headed. Instead, he would have preferred sitting inside his cave in the warm chair, with a hot cup of tea in his hand, discussing the money he could get from the instant quest.

“Brother Alex,” Pu Hang’s voice quavered, “this is not good news. The redhead you slapped, Hang Wo, got expelled from the sect.”

“What does that matter to me?” Alex rubbed an earlobe, trying to shake away the cold, but, oddly, he was failing. The cold was so intense that he could feel it on the tip of his tongue like cold ice cream in his mouth. “I slapped her, and we are even.”

Ha Gun shook her head, touching Alex’s shoulder. “Brother Alex, you’re not understanding how important this is for you.”

Alex shrugged. “What’s there to understand?” he asked. “I did nothing to expel her, nor did I complain about her nuisance. So what does it have to do with me? In fact, I respect the elders for doing a good thing. For whatever reason, it is so.”

“She tried to kill you by upgrading your dungeon room.”

“It was that bitch?” Alex burst out. Fuck. That bitch almost killed him. “Then this is not right. She should be killed right away. The elders should have executed her for trying to kill another human being. Damn it. You ruined my mood.” Just thinking about that bitch turned his mouth bitter, like drinking lemon juice without sugar in it.

“Brother Alex…” Ha Gun seemed frustrated. “I understand your feeling, but her brother is a bully, and he won’t let this thing go away smoothly. He will come for you.”

“What the fuck can he do?” Xue Ji raged, her eyes burning with fury. “Can he rape him for getting her expelled?” A sarcastic chuckle escaped her lips.

“Senior Sister Xue, I—”

Ha Gun couldn’t complete her sentence before Xue Ji pulled Alex away. “Listen, handsome. They will try to force you, but don’t get bogged down. You now have a trump card to play. Let’s meet Elder Zang Wu and get our story straight.”

Ha Gun stared at them, her eyes jumping between them, her thin lips parting a little as though she wanted to say something, but she decided against it in the end. “I’ll take my leave. As I said to Senior Sister Xue, I’ll keep my side of the vow and not tell my grandfather about this.”

“We appreciate that, Junior Sister Ha.” Xue Ji grabbed Alex’s arm and dragged him toward Elder Zang’s cave, located at the top of the mountain.

Alex wanted to say something to the Pu brothers and Ha Gun, but Xue Ji forced him away, and he could only follow her.
